This system is a very common hybrid solution for extending data signals over structured cabling (Ethernet). Essentially, it allows you to use a standard network cable (Cat5e or Cat6) to connect devices that originally use serial or parallel ports.
The adapter has a D-Sub connector (DB9, DB15, or DB25) on one end and an RJ45 female connector on the other. Inside the metal housing, the RJ45 connector has 8 loose wires with metal pins at the ends.
Freely configurable: You decide which D-Sub connector to insert each of the 8 RJ45 wires into. This is vital because not all RS-232 or RS-485 devices use the same pins for transmitting or receiving.
Metallic Housing: The plastic housing with a metallic coating acts as a Faraday cage, protecting the signal from electromagnetic interference (EMI), which is critical in industrial environments.
Advantages of using D-Sub to RJ45:
Cost Savings: A 20-meter DB25 cable is expensive and difficult to run through conduits. Ethernet cable is inexpensive, flexible, and is usually already installed in walls.
Versatility: With a single adapter, you can create null modem cables, straight-through cables, or custom configurations for medical equipment, Cisco routers, or industrial consoles.
Maintenance: If the cable breaks, you only need to replace the standard RJ45 patch cord; you don't have to resolder the D-Sub connector.
Typical Applications:
Network Consoles: Connecting servers and switches (Cisco-type standard). Industrial Control: RS-232/485 communication between PLCs and HMI screens. Cash Registers: Connecting POS peripherals over long distances. CNC Machinery: Sending design files from the PC to the machine over the workshop network.
